6 COVID-19 deaths as Cox talks about Utah’s battle with virus

Utah counted six more fatalities from COVID-19 in the state on the same day Gov. Spencer Cox spoke to the state in its weekly pandemic update.

This comes after the governor, along with six other governors from across the nation, spoke with President Biden on Tuesday. The discussion focused mainly on ideas and strategies states were taking to get more people vaccinated during a time of hesitancy. Biden and Cox met with other leaders from Ohio, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, and New Mexico.

Last week, Gov. Cox announced that the state will no longer require masks to be worn in schools starting next fall. The announcement came after an outcry from parents across the state, demanding the mandate come to an end. “We now have the ability for those that have concerns about the virus to protect ourselves much more,” Cox said. “We have better masks available and opportunities for people to make those decisions.”

Health departments have been given the go-ahead to administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 12 and over. Today, Davis County will start administering the vaccines to kids through their drive-thru clinic. The Davis County Health Department said 26,000 kids around the area are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine out of the 215,000 eligible kids statewide.
