Provo, UT – The Provo Police Department marked the anniversary of Officer Joseph W. Shinners’ death by honoring his legacy and continued impact on the department and community.
Officer Shinners was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 5, 2019, while protecting fellow officers and a citizen. In a statement, the department reflected on his final call, which was played during his graveside service, emphasizing that his legacy of service and selflessness continues through the lives he touched.
Police said Shinners’ memory remains present through stories shared within the department, time spent with his family, and annual traditions such as the Shinners Award, which recognizes acts of service. Officers also continue to build connections with his family and reflect on his life and character over time.
The department said the most important commitment remains ensuring that Officer Shinners is never forgotten, adding that their thoughts remain with his family and loved ones.
