TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A woman accused of running a red light and causing a fatal crash nearly a year ago has been charged after police say controlled substances were found in her system.
Pamela Kelly, 49, of South Jordan, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with causing a death while driving with a measurable controlled substance, a second-degree felony; drug possession, a class A misdemeanor; and running a red light, an infraction.
On May 13, 2020, just after 8 p.m., Kelly ran a red light at the intersection of 6200 S. Redwood Road, according to charging documents, and struck a Toyota Camry attempting to make a left turn. The impact from the collision caused the Toyota to roll into a third vehicle, the charges state.
The driver of the Toyota, Andrew Steven Miller-Jenkins, 35, of Cottonwood Heights, was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Police questioned Kelly who said she “had not been paying attention,” the charges state.
She also stated she had a prescription for treatment of ADHD but had not consumed any alcohol or illegal drugs, according to the charges. Detectives searched her car and found two bottles marked, “pantoprazole,” which is typically used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease.
In one bottle, however, police found a mixture of pills used to treat conditions such as anxiety and attention deficit disorder. A blood test was conducted and amphetamine and methamphetamine were found in Kelly’s system, the charges state.
