COVID Numbers Continue To Improve In Utah; Officials Urge Diligence

PROVO, Utah – The number of new COVID-19 cases has steadily decreased over the past month, and on Monday, health officials reported 584 new cases.

It’s the first time the state’s new numbers have dropped below 1,000 since Dec. 26, 2020, and it’s the lowest case count since September of last year.

Typically, numbers at the beginning of the week are often low, and reports of new cases usually increase through the week.

Today’s numbers bring the 7-day average for percent of positive tests down to 16.7%.

Three more Utahns have lost their lives as a direct result of the virus.

Currently, 402 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.

State epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn has urged Utahns to remain diligent in preventing the spread of COVID-19, even when numbers are going down. This includes social distancing when possible, wearing a mask when social distancing is not possible, practicing good hand hygiene, and getting vaccinated when eligible.

Testing

The Utah Department of Health reports 2,028,163 residents have been tested so far, which is an increase of 3,516 people tested since yesterday.

Of those, a total of 347,208 have tested positive for COVID-19. That’s an increase of 584 cases from Sunday’s report.

The rolling 7-day average for positive tests is 1,425 per day, and the rolling 7-day average for percent of positive tests is 16.7%.

Hospitalizations

There are currently 402 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 129 of those people are in intensive care units. Another 86 patients are hospitalized with suspected cases of COVID-19.

Utah’s ICU beds are 80.3% occupied, and the ICUs in the state’s referral centers are 82.4% full.

Referral Centers are the 16 hospitals in Utah with the capability to provide the best care for patients with COVID-19. Because most patients are transferred to these facilities, their utilization is the best reflection of the true hospital capacity in Utah when looking at ICU beds.

Three more Utahns have died because of COVID-19. To date, the virus has killed 1,668 of the state’s residents.

The following individuals’ deaths were reported Monday:

  • Male, between 45-64, Box Elder county resident, long-term care facility resident
  • Male, between 65-84, Utah County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • Male, between 65-84, Salt Lake County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • Vaccinations

Utah has administered 311,785 vaccines so far. A total of 248,074 residents have received the first dose, and 63,711 have been fully immunized with both doses.
