SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Utah counted 11 more COVID-19 Tuesday, including one Salt Lake County man in the 25 to 44 age group who was hospitalized at the time of his death.
The Utah Department of Health reported the new deaths including eight that happened in April, but had to be investigated before the cause of death was determined to be part of the state’s toll in the global pandemic. Six of the deaths were women, five men and four were from Salt Lake County.
Other counties counting fatal cases include Davis (2), Kane, Sanpete (2), Tooele and Utah counties. The state has counted 2,236 people killed by virus so far. Utah, with a younger population, has a lower death rate than many other states. Of cases that are closed in the U.S. and the world, approximately 2% of them prove to be fatal. The full list of statistics released Tuesday by UDOH are included later in this story.
In other COVID-19 news, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox was on a conference call Tuesday with President Joe Biden and other governors to talk about the fight of the virus.
Utah announced it will get roughly $2.5 billion in pandemic emergency relief funding, part of a $350 billion U.S. package.
President Joe Biden announced Uber and Lyft will offer free rides to anyone going to a vaccination site to get vaccinated, the White House said Tuesday.
That might be important because a recent poll shows that just 11% of Americans who are not yet vaccinated definitely plan to get a shot or shots and 34% say they definitely will not.
That leaves a large swath of Americans in the middle who might still roll up their sleeves — including 27% who say they probably will and 27% who say they probably won’t — if someone credible addressed their concerns.
Biden said Tuesday that 1 million Americans had signed up for health insurance under “Obamacare” during a special enrollment period for those needing coverage during the coronavirus pandemic.
In India, things are grim. Health officials working through the night Monday retrieved 71 bodies floating down the river. More corpses were found Tuesday though it isn’t known for sure where they can from, though it is believed villages without wood have performed water burials for those who have died.
According to aggregate website worldometers.info/coronavirus/, India has had well over 300,000 new cases of the virus each of the last three days with higher totals before. It also had more than 3,000 deaths each of those days and it is believed the actual count is much higher.
India has had the second highest number of confirmed cases after the U.S. with nearly 23 million and over 240,000 deaths. All of the figures are almost certainly a vast undercount, experts say.
